"Great opportunity to network with leading players in Arctic shipping"
(K Tate, Smit)

Dear Colleague

Over the past few years, as the Arctic ice rapidly retreats to levels unseen before, predictions of ice-free routes through the Arctic are being continually revised. Sovereignty issues, protection of the environment, impact on Northern communities, port infrastructure, technology developments and emergency response are all key areas of concern that will be highlighted during the course of this event. Despite the current economic downturn, the potential for long-term development of shipping routes and the increasing volume of energy exports create enormous challenges for all those involved in ice operations.

The 2nd Annual Arctic Shipping North America conference, taking place in the city of St John’s, Newfoundland, with its extensive range of organizations and industries devoted to operations in ice covered waters, will examine the rapidly changing developments in this specialized area, including:

  • evaluate the implications of environmental regulations for shipping activities in the Arctic
  • discuss the impact of increased activity on infrastructure, transport and emergency response
  • debate the future of Arctic navigation, the Northern Sea Route and NW Passage
  • hear the operational and investment needs of shipowners and industrial producers in the Arctic
  • explore the latest new concepts for ice class vessels
  • continue the on-going debate on standards and competence required for ice crew training and navigation, should these be mandatory or voluntary?
  • discuss ice management issues in offshore operations

Together with the members of the St John’s ocean technology cluster, I look forward to welcoming you to this dynamic and exciting venue for this year’s Arctic Shipping North America conference.
