Over the past few years, as the Arctic ice rapidly retreats to levels unseen before, predictions of ice-free routes through the Arctic are being continually revised. Sovereignty issues, protection of the environment, impact on Northern communities, port infrastructure, technology developments and emergency response are all key areas of concern that will be highlighted during the course of this event. Despite the current economic downturn, the potential for long-term development of shipping routes and the increasing volume of energy exports create enormous challenges for all those involved in ice operations.

The 2nd Annual Arctic Shipping North America conference, taking place in the city of St John�s, Newfoundland, with its extensive range of organizations and industries devoted to operations in ice covered waters, will examine the rapidly changing developments in this specialized area, including:

evaluate the implications of environmental regulations for shipping activities in the Arctic
